Description
Fantastic 1901 Hiawatha Indian Lithographed Multi-page Calendar Published by the Taber Prang Art Company, Springfield, Massachusetts.Poems taken from Long Fellows, Hiawatha. Illustrations are signed, from artist C.A. (very light colored wording, hard to tell)
In all of my years of dealing in vintage lithographs, prints, and calendars, I have never seen such a wonderfully illustrated Native American piece.
Dimensions: 11 1/2” x 15 1/4” Lithographed on stiff paper.
Wonderful images showing Indian child with hawk feathers, Indian maiden in canoe, Indian brave shooting bow, Hiawatha and her husband in various scenes.
Calendar consists of a lithographed front and back page with four interior litho pages that have the months printed on them.
Months are not divided equally on the four pages, but are all represented.
Each Lithographed page is single sided, so you could have each page framed and show the whole piece in a series.
Condition overall very nice, wonderful rich colors, no fade. They show much better in real life, my camera flash lightened some of the colors. May appear faded, but they are not.
There are some condition issues:
I have offered a number of photos so that you can see all of the condition issues. I grouped together the corner areas that were most noticeable and did close up shots of them.
There is some edge chipping on front cover right edge. One small chip out of second calendar page right edge. The string or ribbon that held the calendar together at the top through factory punched holes is missing. Front cover has a light scuff line to the left of the Indian boy, and a couple small scratches. Lower left corner has some creases.
Page 1: January through April::light creases upper left corner and two small paper reinforcements attached above the holes for hole strength. Page 2: May: A little piece above left factory hole missing, creases upper left corner, small creases lower left.
Page 3: June and July has a couple of light corner creases.
Page 4: August- November: has one very small lower left corner crease.
Page 5: December, creases lower left corner.
Back cover: half inch tear bottom edge,
creases on all four corners, nothing terrible.
There are some other very minor condition issues, but nothing too distracting. Most issues I described carefully.
This is a must for any serious Hiawatha or Indian maiden collector. Yes there are some condition issues, but they do not terribly distract from the exceptional lithograph work on these pieces.
