DAVY MINE FLAME SAFETY LAMP, c.1800s, AM SAFETY LAMP & MS CO., SCRANTON PA.
Sir Humphrey Davy developed the first working underground flame Mine-Safety Lamp.  It is believed it was first used at Hebbiern Colliery at Newcastle England in January 1, 1816.
This lamp is generally termed a Davy Lamp and is believed to be modeled after the Davy Open gauze model developed by Sir Francis Davy.
It is unknown when this lamp was manufactured by the AM SAFETY LAMP & MS CO., SCRANTON PA.  but was most probably in the late 1800s.   Markings on top of lamp have the mfg. name with numerals 322 and probably the name of the company owning the item.  It reads M.R.R.&M.Co.
Please inspect the attached pictures carefully as an attempt has been made to validate it's condition .
The lamp is brass with the exception of the hanging hook and the gauze which however is original.
. The lamp is all original with the exception of the hanging hook.  A previous owner has attached a replacement. The gauze is in place and intact having no holes or tears.  The top cover and cover lock is in place and working.  Lamp is locked with a set screw which is in place.  The entire external body of the item with the exception noted previously  is original . The wick adjuster and wick are present .
