Imperial German Iron Cross Ring. This is a large (size 9 or 10) iron ring featuring an enameled Iron Cross with supporting oak leaves on either side. It has “DHG” and “1914” marked on the outside, and a patent date on the inside stamped ‘pat Nov24 1914’.
The story behind the ring, manufactured for the war effort, was that precious metal rings turned in for funding the war would be swapped with this ring, a sign of patriotism.
The inscription on the ring shank reads: "Gab ich in schwerer zeit, Ihm gold für dieses eisen", roughly translated to read "In these serious times I give you my gold for this iron". Very good condition; worn by either a woman or a man. Heritage auction sold one of these in 2012 for 0 plus 25% buyers premium!
