Description
This is an original etching from Harper's Weekly of the Nez Perce War in the middle of the conflict. It measures
16 x 12 inches and this history treasure would look great framed in your collection.
The events of 1877, as one Nez Perce elder suggests, can be remembered as "our people's painful and tragic encounter with 'Manifest Destiny.'" When the Nez Perce reservation was reduced to one-tenth its original size, even those who refused to sign the 1863 Treaty were evicted from their homeland and moved onto the new reservation. Eventually war broke out between the non-treaty Nez Perce and the U.S. Army, forcing the non-treaty Nez Perce on a 126-day journey that spanned over 1,170 miles and through four different states. The series of engagements between certain bands of Nez Perce, their allies, and the U.S. Army in the summer of 1877 are events that continue to resonate in the hearts and minds of the Nez Perce to this day. Many of the sites of conflict are protected and preserved by the National Park Service today and worth you research into this history and worth your visit to the parks to learn of this tragedy.
I am listing a number of Native American images from this era. It was a terrible and bloody era when a high percentage of the Native American population was wiped out in North America. I weep for what happened then, and in no way to I condone the actions that occured. My hope by selling these images is that they will tell a story that will live on. Some of the stories show the struggles and others push a sterotype. I hope their story and the education they can tell lives on in you as you purchase these.
