Description:
Torrens, Sir Henry. Autograph Letter, Ordering Payment to a French Deserter Fighting on the British Side During the Napoleonic Wars. Europe: 1808. Autograph letter measuring 9 x 7.25", 1pp, headed "Horse Guards 19th May 1814." Torrens was an officer during the Napoleonic Wars, rising to the rank of Major General and receiving a knighthood. The letter begins "I am directed by the commander in chief to refer to you, the memorial of Ensign Block of Dillon's Regiment to the Duke of Wellington, which has been forwarded by His Grace to the Secretary of State, with an opinion that the arrears claimed by that officer are justly due to him." The letter goes on to order this payment, "from the period of his deserting from the French army, to the date of his commencing to receive payment from this Government." Dillon's Regiment was comprised of foreign troops, including French Emigre's. Letter creased and toned, lacking address leaf.  [6635]
