WWI German Shell Casing 1897 Trench Art Crushed Brass Ashtray Trinket Dish

This trench art is a shell crushed down to 1 3/4” tall. The base is 3.5” wide and it weighs 1 lb. 3.3 oz. The bottom says Patronenfabrik Karlsruhe, Sept. 1897. I have no idea when it was used, and whoever made it did not sign it. The interior has some black crud, so I assume it was used as an ashtray. It has appropriate scratches and patina for it’s age and use.
