Description
This extremely rare item has been in my collection for a number of years. It is a Bavarian Hollow silver coin / box with the image of Bavarian king Ludwig III on one side and the Bavarian coat of arms on the other encircled by the Bavarian motto IN TREURE FEST ( "Steadfast in Loyalty, Firm in Fidelity") with the date 1914/16 The interior is lined with the blue and white diamond pattern of the Bavarian flag. Within the interior is a accordion folded and hinged group of thirty round images of propagandistic scenes and German leaders in the First World War. They start with and introductory title:Unsere tapferen Bayern in Treue und Dankbarkeit gewidmet
("Our Brave Bavaria dedicated in Fidelity and Gratitude"). The pictures feature portraits of military, political and royal leaders; notable German victories on land, on the sea and in the air; symbols of German preparedness and patriotism; memorials to the dead soldiers; campaigns in Belgium, Poland, the Carpathians, Serbia and Ukraine and, of course, the home front. The first leaf in this set of images is stamped (if my German is correct) The Royal Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior. Also written on the leaf by pen is the word
Erstabzug Nr. 755
which might mean that this # 755 of the first edition of this work. The last page has the words
Zur Erinnerung an den Grossen Kreig
(To the memory of the Great War) then a few blank lines that were presumably meant to have the name of a wounded or fallen soldier. Below that is the word
Zugeeignet
("appropriate for") and an image of the Iron Cross The coin diameter is a little over 2". Without the inner folded propaganda booklet it weighs 28.9 grams. The piece is in excellent and complete condition.
